‘Tilik’: Reflects Indonesian Society
Palangka Raya- Tilik becomes viral in Indonesia two months ago. The most influential one from the movie is the main character, Bu Tejo. Bu Tejo becomes the hottest trending in social media at that time.
‘Tilik’ or ‘Women on Top’ is an epic wrapping short-movie by Ravacana Films production released in 2018 and posted in YouTube in 2020. Ravacana Films has produced a lot of spectacular short-movies that brought up several social issues in Indonesia. Their prominent works such are Nilep, Singsot, Anak Lanang, and of course the viral one, Tilik.
How exactly this short-movie becomes viral? Why does the general public in Indonesia interest in this movie? What is the reason people like this movie?
“This movie is relatable. The topic they brought up is so related to Indonesian society's daily life. Gossiping.. menggibah.. meddling in others’ business.. That’s so Indonesian. And I could feel myself in the characters”. Putirsa, a woman in her 40s, gives her insight into this movie. She brings up the reason she likes this movie is because the topic of the movie was related to what she usually saw in her daily life.
“I think Tilik depicts the real life of people in Indonesia, where people who gossiping, whether it’s hoaxes or not, were considered entertaining by the local community,” Said Ajeng, a woman in her 20s who gives her opinion about this movie. Her opinion is not so different from the first source. They both agree that this movie brought up Indonesian interest in daily life.
The related feeling experienced by the audience is the major reason why this movie is famous among Indonesian. The overall aspects; issues, topic, actors’ performances were so daily life-related. The issue of general public stigma about a beautiful and successful single woman, which in this movie is Dian, was considered as a bad woman who can seduce a lot of men to finance her. Also, the issue of general public stigma about ‘ibu-ibu’ that can do anything as they wish. As an example, in the movie, when the police wanted to ticket them for breaking the rules on the way to the hospital, the police were defeated by the ‘ibu-ibu’ who did not want to be ticketed. ‘‘ibu-ibu’ selalu benar’. That might be the issue this movie wants to open up. The actors also performed an excellent act, starting from the main characters until the extras. Their acting is so natural and realistic as if they were in their usual daily life, not a movie production.
Not only gaining huge interest and popularity from the general public in Indonesia, but Tilik has also been awarded numerous prize-winning categories. Tilik was counted as one of the notable works in Indonesian cinematography, especially in the short-movie category. Tilik won Selected Short Film at the 2018 Maya Cup, become the Official Selection for Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival in 2018, and also become the Official Selection for World Cinema Amsterdam in 2019. All these awards show the successes of Indonesian cinematography being recognized by others. Now, Tilik has been English subtitled in the YouTube platform and gained more than 24 million views. Such an amazing improvement from the Indonesian short-movie category!
